View Full Version : Rumours of a FFIV Remake
Exodus

Square Enix has announced that it will release a remake of Final Fantasy IV for the handheld Nintendo DS system. The remake, like the previous Final Fantasy III DS title, will adapt the game into full 3D.
Is it really such a good idea to remake the game when it hasn't even been out on the GBA that long? Personally, I find it pointless, but it's their call I suppose. It'd probably sell just as well as FFIII considering FFIV was a fairly popular game and one of the best of the classics.
Well it is a complete remake. They are redoing the graphics as well as redoing some of the scenarios.
To be honest I think it's a fantastic idea. The GBA is practically an extinct handheld these days, the money is in the DS. Final Fantasy III was a piss poor remake, but then again it's a piss poor game.
Final Fantasy IV is up there with FFVII in terms of people's general favourites. I personally love the game and can't wait to see it remade.
More news at the SE party though.

I guess it could be sort of interesting as long as that random battle system was fixed. Seeing as it's going to be completely remade, they could just off the idea. 3D graphics + random battles = annoyance. I'd probably buy it if they did that. I know it's traditional, but since I played FFXII, it's hard to go back to those. :(

I dunno if I like the Viewtiful Joe look that Cecil's got goin there, but a 3D remake of one of Square's classics will always be welcome in my eyes...It gives me hope for FFVI and, dare I say it, CHRONO TRIGGER!!! Well, *fingers crossed* anyways...
Yeah I heard the characters were going to be in 'normal' proportion.

You read my mind on that Chrono Trigger idea. I've been wanting that for so long. Final Fantasy VI 3D would be absolutely ace.
More I think about it, more I like this Final Fantasy IV remake. I'll agree with you on Cecil's design, it does look a bit like Viewtiful Joe. I'll be fine with the remake as long as it isn't random encounters. Those always make me weep.

I imagine music'd be getting an upgrade too.

Music in FFIV before was MIDI, wasn't it? Or was it MP3?

I guess I'll be alone on this one and voice my disappointment with Squares choice to remake IV. III was understandable since we never really had the chance to play it, but is it really necessary for FFIV?
I guess it's safer to remake a sure thing then to develop a new IP that doesn't include Final Fantasy.

I could never finish FFIV on the GBA. Maybe I'll get a chance ot finish it once it is released on the DS.

I could never bring myself to finish it either. The story was interesting but there were just so many random battles I got tired of it.

Really? Are random encounters that outdated? I knew the possibility of this was occurring, but I never thought it would actually catch on...I mean, it's just such a classic mainstay of RPGs, like barging into people's houses and rooting through their dressers for Potions (or Pornography in some cases)...

Maybe not, since new gamers are getting the chance to play FFIV with FFIV Advance, but some petty new RPGamers can't stand 2D games; it's a terrible fact that only progresses as the years go on...But why not? It's the 20th Anniversary. And they'll make moneys for new remakes...>_>

True, I hear that from a lot of people that started the FF series, and games in general, during its entrance into the 3-D realm.
It's just weird. The graphics aren't horrible enough to bother people from playing it. Hell, I look at the screens of the remade FFIV to that of the original and Advance version and I still think they look better. :/
What I hope is that they make a remake of all classical games even the ones fos psx.
and damn I just hope they will make a remake Chrono trigger. It would be so awesome and maybe for the PSP/PS3. That would own so much. I think that everyone who enjoyed CT would love to see a remake of it and who have thought of it before.

My only beef with FFIV was that there were too many random encounters. Its not the system as a whole, its just how many encounters there were. I remember taking just a couple steps and running into a monster. That's fine at first, but it gets old. :(

Agreed. I'm not sure why they haven't remade CT yet. Perhaps they're worried it won't sell enough?

I think that because they need to get the old chrono trigger team back and dont think they have time or money for that.
I think it would be so sweet think of the music it would be soo damn dynamic and all *shivers* lol. I wish that the Chrono trigger Resurrection project would be up again. That would also be sweet I think. But yeah the it wouldnt be free to play. They would need to sell it. which they cant because it aint their material. hmmm:angry::confused:

I've mostly found that random encounters are enough for each game's leveling up system...You just need a certain amount to gain a certain amount of EXP in a regular (non-leveling frenzy in an attempt to beat those horrific optional bosses) game...I found that if anything, I needed to level up MORE than just walking to & fro to the various plot-points in FFIV, so how could there be too many random encounters? Maybe I'm just looking at it differently...
As for 3D & 2D...I'll never mind playing 2D games, I was raised on 'em and some of the best games I've ever played were 2D, but I'd like to see that greatness in a new light. Why not? The graphics are there now, so why not improve (more or less, to each their own, etc) that one point (not to mention new sound quality & mayhaps a new translation) so as to show us, if not a truer definition of what the creators had in mind, but then a slightly new take on it...If it's good enough for 2D, it should be great enough as 3D. New RPGamers are born every day...Not all of 'em start with hard to find "cartridge" games, not to mention ROMs & emulators, so I think it's a good idea, at the very least for them, to remake the classics.
As for the Chrono series...I doubt it's a question of the proper team (though we can hope to hell they're waiting on someone, they pretty much have everyone and/or can get everyone they need) but more just about their current focus on their other properties...and perhaps the lackluster sales of Chrono Cross in Japan (it did ok in NA at least)...

I dont mind the random encounters this game was fun to play with them anyways...
As for the music upgrade I WILL BUY THE OST... I love the music from IV, the legendary prolouge, theme of love... it all came from this amazing game...
I wonder if it will get one of them snazzy special edition nintendo ds's like the other Final Fantasy Titles have gotten.
I love my Final Fantasy IV on PSone... <3

Final Fantasy IV and V are the only final Fantasy games I haven't played. It'd be great if they re-made V for the dS too, then I'll have played them all. I know they were released on the PS1, but I just never bothered with them.
I hope IV is deeper (story-wise) than III, I know I'm not the only one that found it lacking, but it was one of the early ones, so it can be forgiven. I know I and II didn't have much story, and what story there was wasn't exactly exciting.
I'm not exactly sold on the graphics either. The whole big head and smily face thing is off-putting, to say the least.
And if there are any Wi-fi features, PLEASE, Square-Enix, make it more interesting than Mognet.

While I agree with you on your reasoning, There is no reasoning for me when it comes to this FF. IV was the one that really hooked me and I would love to play this again with an overhaul like this.

The thing is that you're viewing Games as comprabable to movies, in that somehow they're timeless. When in fact they only benefit that old games have is apparent simplicty and nostalgia value. The graphics in FFIV are dreadful, even giving them an FFVI style upgrade would help the process, but seeing the game in 3D is going to help the game reach a wider audience.

Usually I'm against remakes and rehashing in sequels, but in this case I support a FFIV remake. I've yet to complete it (I'm actually working on it now; I've been playing it on and off for like 4 or 5 years, switching consoles from PS1 to GBA), but I know this game could be greatly improved with upgraded 3D graphics, and better quality music. The is obviously considered an RPG classic, but it is hard to take certain scenes seriously now since the 2D sprites look so fugly. I think upgraded graphics would allow for more realistic animations (like fix Cid's spinny jump and the annoying dancing girls) and result in more realistic looking characters which could possibly heighten the emotion of those dramatic scenes. Of course, upgraded music would help that as well.
I'd perfer if Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG were remade first since they never had the honor, but, no matter, I'm buying it for sure if it releases in the US (which it most likely will).

I"ve seen the first few trailers for the FFIV remake and it actully looks pretty damn good. When and I'f this game comes out in the US I will def. buy a DS Now and This will be my first game for it...Hop they do a remake of six...I for awhile they were supposed to do a CT remake but that whole thing fell through.
I read this in a Nintendo Magazine just yesterday. It's quite exciting news, to be honest. I am looking forward to it as I never fully played the earlier FFs because I couldn't just get into them.

You see, THAT's why I support remakes. Because it's gets the graphically challenged n00bs to play the classics!

Seconded.
Although one reason that I didn't play the earlier FF games is that I'm used to the worlds and maps in full 3D and I just couldn't grasp the feel of FF in 2D. That's sounds stupid, but it happens. You CAN say that Pokemon is a 2D RPG, and you play that, but as I said, FF is on a FAR larger scale than Pokemon (Pokemon is a giant series of linked locations of varying sizes, FF has an actual world map with locations integrated into it) and I feel that FF doesn't fit well into 2D as it's just too large and it doesn't do the games any real justice.

It's really a good idea to make a remake of the game because it was one the most popular games and still a rare item if you get lucky enough to have it or find it.

You also have to think of the possibility of the remake being a success upon all the others and that it would help to improve the status of Final Fantasy Fans it's not really much of a problem,as long as it sells good.

What definable qualities does FFIV have which makes a remake such a crime? It's not like cinema or music where the actual medium hasn't changed, games have come on leaps and bounds and if the core aspects of the game are retained but given a coat of gloss to actually bring it up to spec then surely that's a good thing?

Um, actually, in both cinema AND music the mediums have changed...Hell, speaking of video games...the music medium for them has changed! MIDI quality ain't that great anymore...Then there's the CGI FMVs also...
Anyways...as for Rydia...C'mon, she was raised by pan-dimensional magic beings after her mother was killed! It's hard to judge her sexual prowess just because she wears a skimpy outfit...I mean, just look at Shiva throughout the ages! O_o

I love this game and give it a score of 4.5 out of 5. All of you have equal answers for this, but not all of you have as many good points. You are not giving opinions about anyhting but random battles(I think they are just good for leveling.) and graphics. You have to think about the maps and character designs. This will most likely not change, and its for that reason that a re-make is not the greatest idea. I think in the long run though, the only judges of this will be those who have played the original and the re-make.
V_Translanka
02-02-2008, 08:37 AM
Uh, yeah...? So you're saying that since the maps & character designs won't likely change that a remake is a bad idea? I don't even know if you've got the right of it there actually...I mean, they ARE adding a whole new dimension (literally by going from 2D to 3D), right? Plus, as you can see, the designs for the characters can become more intricate and true to their original designs than just some smear of a 16-Bit sprite.
Like I said (I said it, right?), a remake is for nostalgia-factor for the oldschoolers & for a brand new adventure for the n00bs who didn't get the chance to play it before. I think that's good enough reason. Plus, it's not like they're putting their best talent on the job of the remakes, so there's no real loss there...*shrugs*

- Confirmed: Only 25% of the original story was used due to space limitations.

Three quarters of the original script had been left out from SNES version, so some of the unused material will make it into the remake.
