I am going to start a FF game from 1-6 I was just wondering which one is the best to play, I heard a lot of good stuff from FF 4 and 5.

6 is my favourite classic. It has a great storyline and characters. Start on that, then go to 4 afterwards.

What Exodus said...and whoever talked up 5 was a sham-artist. It had the Job Class System going for it and that's about it...and if you're going to be that dedicated to the Job Class System, you might as well go for the perfection that the Final Fantasy series got in FFTactics...

Oh yeah, vi was the best in many ways, not to mention music. If you are going to do some ff digging in the past you should start with vi. only downside was the graphics but everything else covered that minor flaw.

The original. To know the root of all happiness there is no better place to start than the original where you can pay your respects.

I don't think there is a best one to play.
FFX was great for its graphics and FMV and FFVIII's FMV's were great as well.
The cinematics and whatnot really add to the experience.
But the others are all just as good with their storylines and the like.
I think, just play whichever one you have readily available to you. and then continue the series if you like it enough.
EDIT: HMmm sorry, missed the 1-6 bit xP, in that case i would suggest playing the first one, to see how things started, that way you'll notice which characters they've reused in the other games.

Final Fantasy VI is by far the best Final Fantasy to play, no contest. I just finished playing it for about 15th time the other day (I have it on ROM, so I can make the game go faster by pressing the tab key - DO NOT play it on the playstation, it's so slow it's unbearable). Final Fantasy VI has the best music, by far. For the first time Square went into depth of the characters. The story line is great, and there is a lot of freedom and plenty of things to do.
Final Fantasy V is bad, bad, bad. There is nothing good about that game, at all. The first Final Fantasy is interesting to play, but a bit pointless (no story whatsoever, and the characters don't even have names). Final Fantasy II has good potential, but you'll find yourself training far too much. I haven't played Final Fantasy III. As for Final Fantasy IV, play that after VI. As some beautiful celtic music, and a great storyline.

VI was definitely great, but IV is my favorite. It's pretty dated now though, even moreso than VI.

That's why we've got the updated Advance versions! ^_^
EDIT: Oh yeah, not to mention the upcoming FFIV DS, which I hope does well and leads to at least a nice little FFVI DS.

Play VI. Then play IV.
This is all I know.
What are the rest like?

Except for the latest installment, XII, I have loved every FF to date. FFXII is a good game but it lacked the character development that kept me coming back more for more.

The rest are like Square trying to make FFVI and FFIV and failing. :D
Here's me telling about 'em!
FFI - You get to choose from a set of undeveloped character classes and go through a basic storyline about how you're the four chosen ones who must stop evil such n such. It's main cool factor is that since you get to choose, there's a touch of replay value. Try four White Mages!
FFII - Four orphans get their hometown destroyed by some evil empire or some such...You control the three that remain and over the course of the game a different fourth member will float in & out of the party. The story is better than FFI, but the gameplay is tedius. You don't level up regularly, but instead, every action you take (and the actions taken against you) in battle levels up a different stat parameter. You'll be attacking yourself often. I could never play this game for very long, even when I was emulating & using fast forward.
FFIII - Four kids fall in a hole and a crystal tells 'em to go save teh world. The main cool factor with this one was that it was the first FF to have a real Job Class System. It's not as refined as FFTactics though. Their basic differences are that you can equip different things...Not many different abilities. Mage Classes use Magic. The others you'll use for stat changes and depending on what armors you can pick up along the way. Ninjas rock in this one. I ended up liking it more than FFV, myself.
FFV - The character development picks up, but the storyline is basically save the crystals, save the world. Another version of the Job Class System, allowing you to keep certain abilities you learn. If you master a class, you keep the innate abilities in your Bare Class. Any ability you learn can be placed in the one ability slot (two if you're Bare Class, I think) you have. In the end you'll want a varied mastering of the classes and at least a couple of your characters in Bare Class.

final fantasy VI is the best game ever.
FFIV: has great graphics, musics, and gameplay.
FFV: has more improved graphics and job systems.
FFVI: great storyline, musics, and gameplay.
I would suggest you start from either one of them but I recommend FFVI first.

I love FFVI its a great game to start off with and it had one of the better storylines in the series. The music was someting you could hum to and it was all around a great game. IV would be the next one I'd play after just as enjoyable as VI...Oh and I'm new here I all

IV and VI are the way to go. VI is the superior game when it comes to music, characters, plot, and magic leveling up system; but Final Fantasy IV is certainly charming in its own way. I highly recommend you play both.

I'm new to this forum but I must say that FFII and FFVI have to be my favorites. FFII in my opinion is a very good game. It's the first in it's series for the characters to actually receive ultima weapons, and of coarse the level up system is by far one of the best because it's based on the way you battle itself, almost exactly like FFXI. If you haven't play FFXI, the more your character attacks the more strength will increase after battle. All of the other stats increase the same way. HP and MP are different in aspect but the same as far as idea. The damage taken per character determines the hp increase after battle. You can actually select attack while having a shield equipped for a really long time, change equipment in battle to whatever weapon skill you want to increase afterwards ( kill the enemies with the weapon you want to increase.) after using the shield will you major weapon skill increases as well as STR. And vice versa. FFVI, as others have stated is by far the best game in the series for music, graphics, storyline and gameplay.

I'm sorry I would have to say FF V is the best for me.

I consider FFVI to be the best for a number of reasons, the fantastic storyline probably being the penultimate aspect. Not to mention, the gameplay was fantastic. Simple, but it made every character unique.
And you get to play a moogle. That is awesome.

I believe that Final Fantasy VIII would be a good game if you want an actual challenge because of the monsters and all you have to know how to customize and learn who is best to equip with GF's also known as Aeons in FFX.

Yea, I agree with the rest of the bunch and suggest FFVI. I enjoyed my playthrough, the first time I ever played through it was when the remake released for GBA. The music is something else as well, Hopefully they can do something with that on the Wii or something, if they went ahead with the trend of FFIII ad FFIV for DS, it would get too repetitive. Plus, Its about time that the Wii got some FF love, other than just Crystal Chronicles.

everyone is always telling me that FF7 is the best to play. I strongly disagree!!!!! Well it all depends, if your into story line then 7 would be the best for you, but game play I would have to say 8 or 10

Yeah, why bother repeating good (also fiscal) decisions? Repetition is such a sin! :disgust:

I really liked 2. I would say that was my favourite out of the early ones. I liked the storyline and the fact it was 4 brothers, gave slight way to the usual formula.
