Don't you just love these favourite threads? Of course you do!

So pick. My choice is the playstation. Whilst I didn't like VII, I loved VIII and IX. VIII especially. The only thing that would convict me to say the Classics is VI, but one doesn't make up for all six of them.

I didn't like X at all and whilst I enjoyed X-2 it was hardly the standard that Final Fantasy fans is used to.

I don't get it. Are you talking about in the real world or within the games? You've put IX into Modern.

I didn't mean the world within the games in a certain era, just the what console and advances in graphics etc. It wasn't literal either before you start saying VII was made in the 1950s...

As it is at the moment i prefered the more modern era or FFVIII and the likings, mainly because of the noticable difference between graphics and the gripping storylines

Even though my favourite FF is VIII I liked the medieval-ness in the old games because it gave the game a sense of mythical/legend thing about it, and even though we see that in the newer games, it just seems better in the old games for some reason. I really like the way 9 brought that back and made things more medieval again although the design of characters was not such a good idea in my book. I voted against the playstation era because its the fanboys for FF7 who annoy me, espechially since i never really liked the game. And as for the New era of games, I dont think Iv seen enough of them yet, might change my mind on that - or at least have a more detailed opinion on it when i play 12.

The Modern Era: The Playstation FFVII - FFIX

because I love FFVIII, no other FF comes anywhere close, I also liked OX a fair bit because of they way the story untold it's self.

FFX and FFX-2 where just a little to easy for me and I didn't feel as connected with them as I did with other FF's.

My era-ness has confused everyone :(

It's not literal people. Basically it's: The Classics, the Playstation, or the playstation 2.

Is it fair to group everything pre-Playstation into one category?

It's the "Modern Era" without a doubt for me. VII was my first Final Fantasy, and the two that followed were just as good. In fact, I'd really like to see at least one more FF game return to that Playstation formula, with text instead of voices and pre-rendered backgrounds and so on. There was still plenty of life in it after IX.

Must be, this board has. I was thinking of splitting NES and SNES but I think the first FF was on a different console, so didn't want to complicate things. I may be wrong. Also, all the classics lack the depth of those of the playstation era. VI comes pretty close and was indeed the pivot of the series (from my point of view) but I wouldn't class it with the playstation league, and I wouldn't put it with the anthology on its own neither, as it is leagues away from V. I would class it as a classic. Every classic series has its pivot.

Post-Modern Era

i've never been a fan of the older NES and SNES games and the only Playstation game i've really liked was FF8. although FF8 is my favourite, FFX and the FFX-2 i enjoyed (despite their problems) a lot more than FF7 and FF9 and i'm looking forward to being able to play FF12.

The only classic FF I've played for more than 10 minutes is FF6, I haven't played FFXI (but I'd like to, sometime), and FFX was a big disappointment for me (I actually liked X-2 better)...

I enjoyed all three PS1 games though (8 is my personal favorite), so I choose the PS1 era. I still need to play FF Tactics sometime.

Probably Medieval, because they had a lot less problems than the Final Fantasy of today. FFVI was also such. However, I also like modern, despite its problems.

Definitely the modern era. I'm not sure why but I disliked the classics from the medieval era. FF VII was the best FF game in the series IMO.

I prefer the so called "classic" ones.

Thats because I think VI is the pinnacle of FF gaming.

Playstation plz. Although the newer ones have better graphics, I still think the playstaion ones are the best and also where they got most of their fanbase.

The Modern Era had the best FF games ever made ... however I almost chose classics because those were the ones that started it all .. and I love FFI - FFVI

Medieval Era. That's what started it all. Plus I think that the characters from that era were better developed as well as the storylines. I enjoyed FF IV because of the difficulty of it. FF V was enjoyable thanks to the various jobs you had made it an unique experience until FF X-2. FF VI is my personal favorite out of the series so that's another reason why I tend to enjoy that era more then the others.

I thought the storylines of VII and VIII were the two best, plus VII was generally the best game out of the lot. Plus VII was the one that introduced to Final Fantasy

Tough one, but i'd have to say the modern era. Great stories, characters and decent graphics.

I never really got into the S/NES Final Fantasy's and so that's why they aren't there for me. Although the modern era of games was great, with Final Fantasy VII and IX being the apples of my eye, and FFVIII following up pretty closely, but Final Fantasy X just made it for me, and then theres Final Fantasy XI, for me, simply amazing, and my favorite game of the time. There's also all the hype for Final Fantasy XII, which alone is enough to throw the Post-Modern Era right up in front.

The the Medievil era because even though Final Fantasy 7 is my fav I just like old skool games and how cute they look and Final Fantasy 5,6 and 4 are in that era..and they are way harder than later Final Fantasies..so yeah I like Final fantasy 4 because it was a challage..so Yeah Take me back to 1987 !! (Oh dear I'm not even Born....)

I prefer the classic, old-school "Medieval" FFs (FFI-VI). Those were the first ones I played, and they're still my favorites.

I loved the Morden age because Final Fantasy 7,8 and 9 were such good games but I am going to say the Medievil age because the games were so much more of a challage, the Muisc was more upbeat and the Characters are more Funny and just so likeable..

I picked the Modern age. I really like FF IX and FF VII, so just picked what they came under.

Sorry if this post is a bit spammy, I don't know what else to put.

I like the Medieval Era the best. FFVI was the first Final Fantasy I beat, and then I immediately went to my Playstation version of FFIV. The old-school flavor of the games really captivated me in a way only FFIX has done in the other eras. I really liked the old-school gameplay that was easy to learn but had challenging bosses.

I would like to state that I enjoyed all the games I've played, but I prefer the "Modern" era. I loved FF7 (yes, I know it's terribly overrated, but at this stage, who the fuck cares?) and FFIX was even more exciting than FFVII. The only game I didn't enjoy as much, was FFVIII. Come one, compared to FFVII and FFIX, it did not have any memorable characters. Other than that, I loved all of the games I've played.

I enjoyed VII and VIII massively, but just wasn't feeling the return to the medieval era in IX. There were some great concepts, such as the airships and the settings were lovely and all (In the corner of the world map that they bothered to put stuff on) but other than that... I just get really bored with the concept of 'kingdoms' and stuff. Roll on FF XII...

I really enjoyed all of them but the Modern Era was the one that introduced it to me so they get the vote. as for post-modern I will have to play FFXII to decide.

The PlayStation era for sure. I thought VII, VIII and IX were all solid games and enjoyed each one of them tremendously.

I'm not all that fond of the Final Fantasies made on the PS2. Hopefully XII can change that.

i grew up with the modern era, so that had a lot to do with it.
i have an emulator for the snes on my comp, so i've gone back and played most of the older ff's. but i like the more advanced but not too advanced aspect of the modern ones.

Definetly the modern era for me as well. 'And the "classic/medevial/" era closely tailing it. The first FF games are what set the tone. They are the reason the modern era ever existed. So that gives it alot of credit. 'But the modern era just has all the best FF games. FF VII, which in most peoples opinions is the best FF game. FF VII which just kicked-ass. FF IX with is my personal favorite and was a step off from the rest.

The post-modern era IMO isn't that great. Of course, I still but all the games because of me being a Final Fantasy addict. 'But they just aren't as good. Even the TBS is messed up now. In FF XII you fight with free-roam instead. It's still TB'ed I think but..it's just..well, questionable to me.

Certainly the modern era. The PlayStation Final Fantasy games were all pretty much groundbreaking as far as the modern RPG is concerned. All three games were each majestic in their own sense, but I do admit to prefer VIII and IX over VII (my disdain for VII comes mainly from its obnoxious following and hideous amount of spin-offs).

Though there were many full 3D RPG games before FFVII (Panzer Dragoon Saga, Shining Force III, etc.), VII was the first to have a worthwhile plotline with character development. I feel VIII and IX expanded upon that to compete with other good RPGs arising from out of practically nowhere (Star Ocean 2, Xenogears, etc.)

I've got to say, I pick the modern era because I simply adore both FFVIII and IX. I've explained my reasons in many threads now, but I simply can't get enough of either game. They're timeless, and stand as chapters in a book of gaming history, as opposed to mere pages.

I've never really enjoyed the 'medievel' FF games, simply because I find their crudeness and lacking storyline (I even include VI in that sweeping judgement, I can't stand its story) to be quite a put off.

Also, I simply don't consider the post-modern FF games to be on the same pedestal as the modern era.

Their isn't enough of the Post-Modern Era for us to get a good idea of how great and revolutionary it could possibly be. Though my support for the Modern Era is slowly waning in favor of the Post Modern Era. ( FFX is a superb game in it's own respects, FFXII I have that feeling it is going to be one of those memorable ones and FFXIII from the trailers will be clincher of them all.)

But as Alaska has stated the Modern Era has broke quite a few boundaries and brought new ideas into an RPG. Without this era there would be no Post-Modern. The Modern Era is an important step in the history of FF.

i started to be a FF fan when i got FF7 and FF8. these are my two fav games and then i get FF9 which is good but not as good as FF7 and 8. From then on it goes down hill, FF10 sucked same with FF10-2. Maybe FF is final coming to the FINAL fantasy :P as games have been known to be great but have then fallen like FF is (games like Tomb rader, Crash Bandicoot, Sonic)

I could have sworn I posted in this, since apparently I voted in it, but I guess I didn't. o_O Odd.

Anyhow, my favorite would be the PSX-era games. I have a fondness for the "classics," too, but basically I really have to be in the mood to play those. Of the PS2 games, only the original FF10 even ranks anywhere near a favorite of mine.

When it comes to picking a best era of final fantasy games you will never get the same answer from everyone but my best is the ps1 era. Mainly due to playing VII first out of all the games. I have played all of them now and although the ps1 era is my favorite one my best game is final fantasy 6. I love the story, music and above all the gameplay. I am not put off by the graphics one bit.

I would have to go with modern era. This is mainly due to the fact those were my first final fantasy games starting with VII. As Lionheart said, there isn't enough of post-modern era. Though X was a good game, and X-2 was ok. It had too much singing.

I liked the modern-era. Since the graphis were still in development, you were, in a sense, forced to look at the quality of the gameplay, storyline, and the credibility of the characters. Nowadays, I think the games are getting just a bit too flashy, leading the eyes away from the lack of gameplay and purpose involved.

However, I'm not saying I won't give post-modern a chance.

If you had split the oldschool FFs from 8- to 16-bit, I would have said that the 16- and 32-bit era were equally matched...But, w/the inclusion of FFI and FFIII w/FFIV and FFVI, the oldschools simply outweigh FFTactics, FFVIII and FFIX...I think the current gen has a lot of potential though, especially w/the many re-releases/remakes of the oldschool FFs on handheld...all this gen would need to completely capture my heart would be a remake/port of FFTactics on PSP...
