When I play games online, and have to create a character, I almost always pick a female, just because I find them more interesting. That said, some of my friends find this odd, but I don't think it is that big a deal. It's just that when I have to stare at the screen for an upwards of 50+ hours, I would rather look at a girl than some generic husky dude who looks like all the other generic husky dudes. I was wondering what other people thought...well, am I strange, or what?

They have a saying in MMO's where most females in game are actually males, while not entirely true it shows you that a lot of people do prefer to play females though I find the normal response funny " I don't wanna stare at a guys ass all day". But really, are you gunna get off on staring at a pixelized female ass?

Generally I make all my characters male not for any particular reason other then I don't like to confuse people and I frankly don't mind looking at a male all day because. . .It's not real, males are just as generic in games as females. I do, however, in WoW have 1 alt that is female and that was for diversity.

Ive always created female characters in online games. Ive never tried out a male character. My friend is obessed with anime and elf girls, so this was perfect for him and he goes round claiming to be a blonde 17 year old girl from New York! Some guys do chat him up when he flirts, its so damm funny!

It's not even the homophobic reason for me though, I just think there is more variety in female characters than male, and I could be totally wrong, but I doubt it because the matter is subjective. Maybe it's because every videogame character up to this point, from Mario to Sonic to CJ Johnson has been male, and I just want a change.

Edit: To ~SS~: I think actually claiming to be a girl in the real world is taking things a little too far, but I have never understood why people flirt on those games anyway, it seems creepy to me.

The best reason to pick a girl character on those games is simply that it makes things easier. In my experience, everyone is looking to help out a new girl character, give her items, etc etc.

I usually pick a male character if the female characters don't have some abilities that I want. If the skillsets are the same for both genders, I'll get a male.

Though I don't see a problem with people picking female characters, I just think it's weird when they try to take advantage of this for items or to make fun of horny teenagers. As long as they don't lie about their gender, I don't see why there should be a problem.

In any situations where I have to create a character, I try to make it look at least vaguely like myself, or what I'd want myself to look like.
The Drakan90 'persona'.

As for the cross-dressing "I'm a girl in the real world" thing:

In online games I've always used male characters. In more social ones, like Puzzle Pirates, it'd just make interacting with people a bit too strange for me. In fact I don't think I've come across any cases of guys using female characters in that game, but then these are just cartoon sprites so I suppose it's a bit different.

In offline games it's a different story, because then the character isn't an avatar meant to represent me to others. Usually then I just pick whichever one looks the most stylish, regardless of gender.

I see your point on rather looking at a woman than a guy, but there are uncomfortable things that come along with it. See, if people don't know if you're a guy or not, I've seen a good amount of people 'sweet talk' female characters, and stalk them. Not to mention it would be strange talking with someone in the game, always addressing you as her, or she.

I'm aware you can just say I'm a guy, but people might respect you less.

In all honesty, I do find it a little odd to find males entering MMO's as females, but that's just my opinion.

That's a good point, although I've yet to see anything resembling role-playing going on in games like Flyff. Its makers spend all this time creating big worlds to explore and populating them with NPCs, and then when players are thrown in all they can be bothered to say to each other is "rez plz", "omg lag killd me", "buff plz", "REZ PLZ", "lol nub", and "Yap!".

^lol nub :D

I always play female characters in MMORPGs. They're usually more stylish anyway. And obviously it has its advantages! In RO I get random items from guys that approach me, just by sitting with them and making laughing emoticons. Just being friendly, honest. ;)

Anyway, I don't think there's anything wrong with guys playing as girls. But it can be a bit strange. But very funny if you're playing with this 'girl', and male characters come and hit on 'her', and 'she' flirts back. :XD: I'm too easily amused.

nostalgicmix has a point, you can be whoever you want in game. But Rag has a point too.... D: But it doesn't really matter, I think, because you can still be whoever you want, even if you don't play the part 'properly'. XD.

Depends, I do both.

In WoW, I have an Orc (male) Warlock which si my main, and my two most played alts are an Orc (female) Warrior and a Human (female) Rogue. I hate Male Humans in that game because they look terrible.

In the very few online games I have played, I've always been both male and female. Mostly male, but both.

I almost always play as female characters in any game.

Most of my characters in City of Heroes/Villains are female, and my main character (a villain) is also female. I prefer playing as women because they're A LOT easier to look at and they tend to be a lot more interesting than most male characters.

I like playing a girl, because I am one. I dunno, I've never wanted to play a male character and the one time I made a male character in WoW, it was weird and I never played them again. [Partially because they were a crappy Tauren OMG.]

Girl power, jeez. It's cool to see girls with weapons, kicking ass, duh!

I always play a guy because while playing a female maybe more aesthetically pleasing, I find it creepy.

I usually will pick the female character. Always seems more interesting, and I have lots of fun flirting. If I was a guy, I'd expect a bunch of idiots wanting to chat with me saying stuff like '8=======D' and 'penUs' (misspellings that get past the censors..). People seem to treat the female characters better. Plus, I'm the most damn feminine guy I've ever met..

I mix it up, but I will say I have a predisposition to females. They really do look better, after all.

I always go for male, but now and again for fun I choose a female like in KOTR II.

I don't play any MMORPG but in normal games i pick whoever i like the look of, male or female. Something that's common in fighting games is that a lot of the female characters are better than most males ones, in Soul Calibur 2 i don't think i ever used a male character other than testing one out.
On Mario Kart: DD/Mario Party 6 i always pick Toadette, i don't know why but it's a character i've always stuck with.

Seconded, I do that. Then make a new male character and switch all the items over. Piracy.
