I'm just wondering...you know how there are CDs now entitled The Perfect Dance Playlist, The Perfect Trance Playlist, and so forth? Well...
Let's say you've been asked to make The Perfect Final Fantasy Playlist. What are you going to put in it? Of course you can choose songs from the various game soundtracks, but popular songs not directly related to the series are also fair game.

Hm, well, there are a lot of fine pieces in the FF reportoire, so there's a broad range of great songs to choose from. To throw away the monotony that simply listing the songs would bring, I'll give a reason for each of my playlist choices:
1.) Eternity ~Memory of Lightwaves~ (FFX-2) - Wonderful piano piece, and an emphatic opener. It's quite simple and has just two different root-note/chord progressions, but I think it has the ability to encapsulate the mood of any FF playlist perfectly.
2.) The Landing (FFVIII) - If you recall, this is the theme at the beginning of the Dollet Mission. Epic, tense and truly deserving of a place in any FF-orientated playlist. Probably one of Nobuo's finest pieces.
3.) Drifting (FFVIII) - A sombre and highly melancholic piece of music. It's simply just a small string ensemble playing in the scale of Bb Minor, but it's not to be underestimated due to its simplicity -- it's very moving.
4.) One Winged Angel (FFVII) - As overrated a character Sephiroth is, this is a fantastic composition. Even the translation of the latin vocals are as lame as Sephiroth himself, but the music truly does repent for any injustice that the character and vocals have done.
5.) Bran-Bal, The Soulless Village (FFIX) - A great piece of music which is a nice reflection of Zidane's grave discovery. I find FFIX's soundtrack to be highly underrated, and with pieces like this, it definitely deserves more credit than it receives.
6.) The Decisive Battle (FFVI) - Probably the best out of the boss theme bag, and a fun listen. I strongly recommend The Black Mages' version of it, also.
7.) Clash on the Big Bridge (Fight With Gilgamesh) (FFV) - Okay, FFV didn't have a great story or a great soundtrack for that matter -- but this song is a positive anomaly in an otherwise bland OST. It's a very funky piece of music with some great synth leads and a catchy chorus. It does Gilgamesh justice.
8.) Fragments of Memories (FFVIII) - This is a nice song which reminds me of the beginning of disc 2, where Laguna and Ellone's 'father/daughter' relationship is first explored. It's a part of the game which breaks up the tension of the end of the first disc and the oncoming depression of the... desert prison.
9.) J-E-N-O-V-A (FFVII) - I think this one speaks for itself. A really cool piece of music.
... and finally, 10.) The Extreme (FFVIII) - This is the final boss theme of Final Fantasy VIII. I can't express in words just how awesome this song is, but I'll have a good go. The melancholic acoustic opening just builds up into a synthesiser orgasm, which eventually descends down into the acoustic pattern, overlayed by some soothing piano before once again building up to climax. I jizzed my frilly little panties.

Nice suggestions so far! I'm not going to put my playlist in the pot just yet, but I wanted to go ahead and talk about some popular music that I think might be okay...
Anywhere Is - Enya - very thought-provoking and a song that I've always liked to listen to when I think of traveling, journeying, or questing-and we all know that a journey has been a motif of the FF series. From Enya's late-90's release Paint The Sky With Stars.
The Day After (Gonna Make It) - Twista featuring Syleena Johnson - Every lead character in the series, as far as I know, is of course severely tested, at times nearly to the point of death (depending on how skilled we are, but often they undergo suffering and hardship as part of the story). I see this as their way of saying they're not quitters. From Twista's new album, released earlier this year, of the same name.

1. FF9 Main Theme (from Original Soundtrack PLUS) - I love the theme for this game. The fully orchestrated version found here is just fantastic, probably good for a drive in the mountains on a sunny day actually!
2. The Landing (FF8) - Intense, dramatic music accompanying two of the best 'action scenes' in the game.
3. Terra in Black (remix of Terra's theme) - Just edges its way past the 'Death on the snowfield' remix, it's a quality rock version of the theme.
4. Clash on the big bridge (Black mages) - Prefer it to the original simply because of the better sound quality.
5. Premonition (FF8) - Another song with a great buildup - I love the songs that have a gradual crescendo and transgression into a 'song within a song'.
6. Dark Messenger (FF9) - The We Will Rock You style beat at the start is fantastic - as is the transgression from what you'd expect to be the rest of Immoral Melody to this kinda jazzed up rock n roll number. It works!
7. You're Not Alone (FF9) - Just a song that commands respect. Really stands out as top notch, this - I want some kind of 'real' version, not produced midi-wise :(
8. Seymour Battle (FF10) - Fantastic choral intro (should've lasted longer), and the thrusting beat of it combined with the whole techno build-up throughout is just great!
9. J-E-N-O-V-A (Black Mages) - more powerful than the original, and that's what I like!
10. One Winged Angel (Advent Children) - I prefer the guitar-laden version - only problem is that the revamped 'lyrics' are difficult to get used to, and don't go with the music anywhere near as well as the original lyrics.

3. Terra in Black (remix of Terra's theme) - Just edges its way past the 'Death on the snowfield' remix, it's a quality rock version of the theme.
I personally liked "Death On the Snowfield" mix better...Both Ailseen & bLiNd are just awesome though...wtf's w/OCR not having "Death On the Snowfield" anymore??? V_V
Anyways, I'll just give one opinion right now...
Eyes On Me (FFVIII) - This is a great song, but I really think that the ACOUSTIC GUITAR version is where it's at. The English language version absolutely sucks balls though...Unless I'm thinking of one of the other FF songs...but I don't think I am...Man, I need to dl the acoustic version again...
