Am I the only one who is seriously bugged when they see this combination in an anime film or series? It just really takes the immersion out by using the two visual media at the same time...Or maybe I'm just a freak...?

Yes you are a freak. lol! No I like combinations in Anime because it looks better and makes it more interesting, as long as it blends well, if not it can look stupid.

Sometimes it blends in kinda well (like in Black Lagoon and The Third), but sometimes it looks like it was copied outa XIII or summat, like in the Hellsing OVAs

No comment about the freak bit :p

But yes, these bastard by-product do piss me off. I am not wowed by "3D-ness", srsly, so at best, CGI will just distract me. At worst, it will actually made me think, "gee, this anime is so sucky they had to resort to CGI to shore it up".

The only title I can think of that deserves to use CGI is the Ghost in the Shell -- I guess it doesn't look out of place when the setting is uber-futuristic. But honestly, I wish the producers will try to wow the crowd with the good 'ol staples instead -- a good story, nice music, and maybe great-looking characters. All the CGIs in the world can't change the fact that Beast Wars is teh sucketh.

Most of them just look downright out of place, but there are some exceptions. Maybe it's just the industry trying new stuff out, but it's going to evolve eventually. In terms of CGI, I think studio GONZO has had the most experience in this type of work, it's what they're known for pretty much.

(Gankutsuou had some of the best CGI+Tradional blending ever, with a small addition of eye numbinmg photoshop patterns <3)

Yeah...I was kinda talking about Ghost In the Shell: Stand Alone Complex actually...When 2D characters get into 3D vehicles it just...bugs the hell outta me...Plus, the subs are on the screen instead of in the widescreen blackness...wtf is that all about? Er...And from the small preview of Blue Submarine no. 6 that I saw, my brain was similarly discombobulated by the mixture...Eh...Whatever, I guess...

I liked the way it was done in Appleseed. It worked well and the scene in the rain I thought looked absolutely amazing. It may not be Anime in the strictest of senses but it's still very pleasing on the eye.
I found GITS:SAC quite good in terms of animation however there was at times areas that it quite simply didn't work.
Still I'm always up for something new and interesting assuming it works well.
