Question About FFXII

i was watching the trailer on the official website and on one of the shots of in-game play showed van holding a knife or a really short sword. are my eyes just deceiving me?

my question is, are you going to be able to choose what weapon vaan uses and if so which ones are available to him?

or is it like most other FF games where they have a set certain weapon that they use throughout the whole game and is just updated when the opportunity presents itself?

In FFXII, any character can use an weapon available in the game. But you must have the license to weild it. This also applies to shields and armor.

Just to expand on what Lionheart said, in the game you can use any weapon you come across with any character, with the possible exception of the ultimate weapons.

The game has Axes, Staffs, Poles, Bows, Cross Bows, Daggers, Swords, Bombs, Rods and others that I can't remember at the moment and every character is able to use any of these weapons if you activate the proper licence. Although some characters are associated with certain weapons (like Basch who would use a Knight's sword, Fran who would use a Bow or Basch who would use a gun), you aren't limited to using those particular weapons.

There are multiple licenses for every type of weapon. To be able to use all the weapons of a particular class, you may be required to activate 5 or so licenses, as each licence can be used to activate 4 or less weapons.
