The Darkest Hours

..

Rather than a whole continent, or a country moretheless, let us focus on one city. Damarthill. It is a grand city, comprised of 4 sectors, each with a thriving city and corresponding slums, and the countryside. Damarthill has mechanized, and has the dependence on machines has lengthened over the years. Only the countryside does not fully depend on machines; they resolve to the more traditional means of doing things. Weapons have changed as well; in the countryside they still resort to their swords and spears, but in the city they have developed lasers and rays and turned them into guns. Magic is a forbidden art; confined to only the deepest dungeons and darkest countries unheard of in this tale.

Damarthill's governing building stands in the middle of the four sectors. It is the tallest building in the city, standing 75 stories high. It contains business, politicians, army and war management, scientific research, weapon development, and basically everything that keeps the city running. There is also a government building in the countryside; however that is a small building and is placed there only for governing purposes. However, the leader of the city, or the High Governor Thalias resides in the 75 story Damarthill Centre. The 74th floor is his quarters; the 75th floor is his office. There, along with a team of other subordinate governors and leaders, he runs the grand city.

Yet there are many problems. Due to the mechanization, the city is polluted and full of waste. Poverty is especially high in the slums; the people are unhappy and grumble that these technologies never benefit them. Hatred is high; yet Thalias contains enough machinery and high tech weapons to silence opposition that rises. The Damarthill Army, the largest in the country, is famous for their discipline, bravery, and firepower. That is why Thalias can stay in control.

.:Conflict:.

Enter Rand Lathar. A young man from the countrysides, Rand has bore the hardships of living a tough life for a seventeen - year old. Losing both of his parents to the will of Thalias, he has developed a passion of hatred towards him. Leaving him to care for his younger sister Raven, Rand has fended for himself and raised enough money doing undercover odd jobs and putting his life at risk everyday. Yet the bond between him and his sister will never die.

One day Rand encountered an unfamiliar stranger in the city. He wore all black, bore a silver sword, and approached him. "Look for the 2 moons. When the time comes, you will be the chosen leader of the liberation of this city." Rand had no idea what that meant, but every night he waited. He did know one thing though; and it stuck . "You will be the chosen leader of the liberation of this city."

.:Two Moons, and the Faction:.

The time arrived. Rand told all his friends about the strange message, and that he would form a faction to overthrow the Governors and liberate the city. His friends were skeptical; yet they were eager to do anythign to improve their lives and change their future. He told them that they would hold the meetings at his house, and that they had to be in secret. He warned them that their lives were forfeit if Thalias and his menacing troops ever found out. They were hesitant, but they agreed.

Their mission : to destroy the Damarthill Centre. It sounded impossible, but Rand knew he had to do it. He would be the chosen liberator, and he was going to do all he could to make it possible. No magic, limited weapons, and a small group against Thalias' whole army and the whole government system. This was truly the darkest hours.

.:Signing-Up:.

Basically, because of limited choices to make this RP more interesting, there are a few classes to choose from :

Bard: Music player with strange talents. Quick and nimble, they are masters of knives and lulling tunes to outsmart their enemies. They are spreaders of knowledge, and they are the ones to look to when seeking information.

Street Thief: Masters of the shadows. They wield daggers and short swords, are master thieves, and the people to go to when you need something desperately.

Mercenary: Basic elite soldier, ex-Thalians army and seeker of opposition. Uses an array of firepower weapons or swords supplied to him/her, they are the power of the faction.

Spies: The most secret of the faction. Planners of the mission, they use tactics of escape and evasion rather than fighting; flash grenades, smokes, etc.

The basic template [copy all in bold] :

hmmm, well since i'm back.
i'll probably join but i just have a question first.

well is this kind of futuristic with the weapons?
and if so what does that mean in terms of like musical instruments for bards, or like knives and swords?

Name: John Sage
Age: 36
Gender: Male
Class: Mercenary

Appearance: John dresses for the job. He is the grim reaper with a bank account; one that he likes to have filled. Sage dresses on the finer side of the Thalian society, with a closet full of dark suits and jackets to match the dark life of his job. He keeps his head shaven, smooth and shiny so a man could see his reflection just before he hears the click of the trigger. A small white handkerchief hangs loosely from his right side pocket adorned with his insignia “JS”; “It’s for the job health and safety regulations.” And not just for fashion, Sage learned long ago that a suit-matching long coat can come in handy for “larger” situations.

Weapons: As it goes, Sage has learnt much from past experiences. He understands that killing a man is a battle of wits, weapons, and honor. For any occasion John carries a weapon to suit. For the man that deserves an honorable meeting on the field, to the man that has lost all honor and deserves not a fighting chance. They all are in his study of his apartment, minded only by Sage and his butler, from all reaches of the world, from the depths of history, to the art pieces that mark the new age.

Personality: Professional and Dark. John keeps his work life from his personal one. He minds a passion for the finer things in life. What was art before and long ago, fills his apartment with music and scents and sights that accompany even the new art that John finds in the tight confines of Damarthill. Sage considers his hobby an importer of beauty; something the Thalian government does not approve of. Given his history with the government, however, Sage manages to get what he wants typically at the cost of a job or contract.

History: It was beyond his control. Sage never planned on joining the army of Damarthill. Hearing the stories of the Damarthill jail, or hearing no stories at all, made the army a quick preference. No one who had ever gone to jail had ever made it out.

And so it went. Sage life changed so quickly that days in the army, became months, became years. He was trained, and trained again, and again, each time at a higher level than before, each time more deadly than the last. The army saw in Sage a capability that they meant to mould for their own means.

Silent rebellions were not much without a leader. Crime lords were either non-existent, or fairing their street wars against the streets, to not hurt of Damarthill. Although the army of the Thalian government was unmatched, its silent ways were its true strength. Money always seemed to be in the hands of the rulers, and with little of it going to the depths of society.

A late night crossing of paths, by no coincidence, saw Sage’s “unemployment” from the army. Silent stirrings were making sounds in the under-city, and by no means was this job to be related to the government. A contract killer did the job nicely, and the money received oddly started Sage on the path that had landed him in the army originally.

The check was handsome enough to purchase a few pieces of artwork and an apartment downtown. And so it went. Days once again became months, and months turned into years of Sage receiving payment from sources for jobs that required professional silence.

It is not so often that jobs such as Sage’s can stay so silent. Quickly Sage realized he had been mistaken; there was more money in the city than he had suspected. Political agenda’s became skewed and blurred along with zeros on checks. John profited in his profession, but it was hard for him to stay uninvolved.

Years gave to wisdom, and wrongs no longer went unnoticed. Sources told Sage about an unlikely uprising from the inner-city. It seemed as if a change of power was at hand. His bank account was full, but his life was not.

Alright sounds alright so far. Dr. Hojo, I hope you lengthen out your profile more as we progress.

Zek.
11-02-2006, 02:43 AM
Name: Zek
Age: 16
Gender: Male
Class: Bard

Appearance: Zek is dressed in mostly colorful attire, as most bards are. Having dark blue pants, on the tighter side then what most are perhaps used to seeing. He wears a small yellow button shirt (it ends at about his ribs) and a tight dark blue undershirt. Despite all that color he has a large black cloak (it’s black on the outside, but on the opposite side its red) that drapes over his whole body like a curtain. His weapons rest on his back.

Weapons: Zek has a mandolin that rests on his back. It’s special for more than one reason, not only because it was handed down to him by his father, but because the body was carved from the oldest mahogany tree in the forest by his home. It has an extra set of strings, allowing him more freedom when playing and he was told the second set carry a special ability. His other “main weapon” would be his dual short swords that rest on his back as well. Though they are held in the same scabbard when pulled free they fall almost immediately in two, meaning Zek either can use his mandolin or his dual short swords. He also has a few small wind instruments that rest at his side, and sometimes has a harp beneath his cloak.

Personality: Although usually optimistic and hyper if the situation gets overly bleak and dark he can be quite the pessimist. Considered artsy, due to the fact he plays music, he is very creative and clever in most situations.

History: Zek was raised in the third of the four sectors. He lived the happy life (for the most part) that was promised in Damarthil. When it came time that the High Governor decreed a draft Zek’s father hid him away. He was then trained by his father in the art of sword combat. Zek didn’t practice his sword technique’s for awhile after that, for he had fallen in love with music. He began mastering most instruments, flutes, piccolos, mandolins, sitars, etc. Finding the wood wind instruments and the mandolin to be his favorite he used those the most. Once his father found out he was initially disappointed, but found it better to encourage his son and gave him the mandolin he carries with him today. Zek has had this mandolin since he was nine, and received his dual short swords on the same day. He carved his wood wind instruments himself after he left home to venture off. But when he did he heard of the rebellion and chose to help Damarthil one last time before he would leave for a journey.
