Shining Force is a 1992 turn-based strategy role playing game for the Sega Genesis console. While primarily a traditional fantasy-themed game, it contains some steampunk(meaning it contains a lot of futurestic and non in the game) elements.

This is technicly the first Shining Force in the series, before it came Shining in the Darkness. This game was also remade for the Gameboy advanced, and named Shining Force: Ressurection of the Dark Dragon.

The game opens with a Star Wars-like feel, due to this text being shown.

In ages long forgotten... Light fought Darkness for control of the world.
Dark Dragon led the evil hordes of darkness.
The Ancients fought back with the Powers of Light.
Dark Dragon was defeated and cast into another dimension.
The Lord of Darkness vowed to return in 1,000 years.
Time passed, and Dark Dragon was forgotten by all.
Ten centuries of peace ruled the land of Rune.
Until the kingdom of Runefaust brought war to Rune.
Hordes of evil creatures ravaged the land.
Here and there, strongholds of Good still held out...
awaiting a Hero who could wield the Powers of Light!

This pretty much sums up the past and present of the game, in an interesting way. I found it to be like the movie Star Wars because of the text dissapearing and reapearing.

There are a number of useful and useless character to play as in this game, all of whom revovle around the story in some thin line or another. The hero (nameable, but was announced as Max) is a young man whom is learning the ways of a swordsman, then finds himself venturing into a battle, wich leads to dozens more. My personal favourite would have to be Hans, an Archer that follows you from the beginning, he's probably one of the stronger characters, and his range can save the battle many times.

Other then the unique tactical stance this game has, the graphics are nothing to sneeze at either. For a 1992 title, it actually has graphics that are atleast above satisfacory, 2d-ish, the world map allows you sufficiant freedom, while not hounded by horrible graphics.

That's in battle, semi-turn based.

As you can see, the graphics aren't half bad, atleast for it time.

This is one of my favourite series, please, discuss. :D
